Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with the input value %00 leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple argument injection vulnerabilities in Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.5 and 3.0alpha allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a NULL byte (%00) and shell metacharacters in a (1) mailto, (2) nntp, (3) news, (4) snews, or (5) telnet URI, a similar issue to CVE-2007-3670.
The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was shared 07/27/2007 by Billy Rios as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-4041 since 07/27/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 730 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25820 (Firefox < 2.0.0.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (25820) and SecurityFocus (BID 25053†). The entries VDB-38187 and VDB-38186 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
