A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.5 (Mail Client Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Filetype Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.6, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.13 and 2.x before 2.0.0.6, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via certain vectors associated with launching "a file handling program based on the file extension at the end of the URI," a variant of CVE-2007-4041. NOTE: the vendor states that "it is still possible to launch a filetype handler based on extension rather than the registered protocol handler."
The bug was discovered 07/20/2007. The weakness was disclosed 08/07/2007 by Billy Rios (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-3845 since 07/18/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25852 (Debian DSA-1344-1 : iceweasel - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165052 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey (SUSE-SA:2007:057)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9774.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38327), Tenable (25852), SecurityFocus (BID 25053†), OSVDB (38031†) and Secunia (SA26234†). The entries VDB-2297, VDB-2296, VDB-2298 and VDB-3406 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
