Details
A vulnerability was found in home-assistant Home Assistant Core up to 2026.5.x. It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects the function backup-restore of the file site-packages/sitecustomize.py. The manipulation of the argument linkname with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Home Assistant Core before 2026.7.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the backup-restore function that allows attackers to write files to arbitrary absolute filesystem paths by supplying a crafted tar archive with a SYMTYPE entry containing a benign member name paired with an absolute linkname pointing outside the extraction directory. Because the official Docker image runs the Home Assistant process as root and the subsequent regular-file entry is written through the unvalidated symlink, attackers can achieve remote code execution by overwriting auto-imported Python paths such as site-packages/sitecustomize.py or custom component directories.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-64824 since 07/20/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/21/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 2026.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
