Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 (Database Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-134. The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IBM DB2 UDB 8 before Fixpak 15 and 9.1 before Fixpak 3 allows local users to create arbitrary directories and execute arbitrary code via a "crafted localized message file" that enables a format string attack, possibly involving the (1) OSSEMEMDBG or (2) TRC_LOG_FILE environment variable in db2licd (db2licm).
The bug was discovered 08/15/2007. The weakness was released 08/18/2007 by Joshua J. Drake with Application Security, Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4273 since 08/09/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25905 (IBM DB2 < 9 Fix Pack 3 / 8 Fix Pack 15 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36106), Tenable (25905), SecurityFocus (BID 25339†), OSVDB (40984†) and Secunia (SA26471†).
