Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 (Database Software). This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IBM DB2 UDB 8 before Fixpak 15 and 9.1 before Fixpak 3 does not properly revoke privileges on methods, which allows remote authenticated users to execute a method after revocation until the routine auth cache is flushed.
The bug was discovered 08/15/2007. The weakness was published 08/18/2007 by Joshua J. Drake with Application Security, Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4417 since 08/18/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25905 (IBM DB2 < 9 Fix Pack 3 / 8 Fix Pack 15 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19523 (IBM DB2 Authority on Method Persists After Revoke Vulnerability (IY88158)).
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36108), Tenable (25905), SecurityFocus (BID 25339†), OSVDB (40977†) and Secunia (SA26471†).
