A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU tar. This vulnerability affects the function contains_dot_dot. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. Directory traversal vulnerability in the contains_dot_dot function in src/names.c in GNU tar allows user-assisted remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via certain //.. (slash slash dot dot) sequences in directory symlinks in a TAR archive.
The bug was discovered 08/13/2007. The weakness was shared 08/24/2007 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4131 since 08/02/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
