A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 0.9.2 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component XSPF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Array index error in VLC media player 0.9.2 allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary memory and execute arbitrary code via an XSPF playlist file with a negative identifier tag, which passes a signed comparison.
The bug was discovered 10/15/2008. The weakness was shared 10/16/2008 by Francisco Falcon with Core (Website). The advisory is available at coresecurity.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4558 since 10/14/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
