A vulnerability has been found in RealVNC up to P4.4.2 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function CMsgReader::readRect of the component Encoding Type Handler. The CMsgReader::readRect function in the VNC Viewer component in RealVNC VNC Free Edition 4.0 through 4.1.2, Enterprise Edition E4.0 through E4.4.2, and Personal Edition P4.0 through P4.4.2 allows remote VNC servers to execute arbitrary code via crafted RFB protocol data, related to "encoding type."
The bug was discovered 01/12/2009. The weakness was released 10/20/2008 with RealVNC (Website). The advisory is shared for download at realvnc.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-4770 since 10/28/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
