Red Hat Fedora 7 extract.c path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Red Hat Fedora 7. This affects an unknown part of the file extract.c. The manipulation results in path traversal. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4134. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Red Hat Fedora 7. Affected is an unknown code block of the file extract.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in extract.c in star before 1.5a84 allows user-assisted remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via certain //.. (slash slash dot dot) sequences in directory symlinks in a TAR archive.

The bug was discovered 08/21/2007. The weakness was presented 08/30/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4134 since 08/02/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67565 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : star (ELSA-2007-0873)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156045 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Star (ELSA-2007-0873)).

Upgrading to version 7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36324), Tenable (67565), SecurityFocus (BID 25417†), OSVDB (39576†) and Secunia (SA26673†). See VDB-38494 for similar entry. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
