A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 1.2.31/1.4.0beta33 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. Multiple off-by-one errors in libpng before 1.2.32beta01, and 1.4 before 1.4.0beta34, allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or have unspecified other impact via a PNG image with crafted zTXt chunks, related to (1) the png_push_read_zTXt function in pngread.c, and possibly related to (2) pngtest.c.
The weakness was presented 10/20/2008 by Tobias Klein (Website). The advisory is available at videolan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3964 since 09/09/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
