Details
A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.2.3 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function fnmatch. The manipulation of the argument pattern with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
PHP before 5.2.3 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via (1) a long string in the pattern parameter to the glob function; or (2) a long string in the string parameter to the fnmatch function, accompanied by a pattern parameter value with undefined characteristics, as demonstrated by a "*[1]e" value. NOTE: this might not be a vulnerability in most web server environments that support multiple threads, unless these issues can be demonstrated for code execution.
The bug was discovered 09/04/2007. The weakness was shared 09/04/2007 by Rasmus Lerdorf with SecurityReason (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4782 since 09/10/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely.
