Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc1 VCE drm/amdgpu/vce integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as very critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc1. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the file drm/amdgpu/vce of the component VCE. This manipulation causes integer overflow. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-68108. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc1 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file drm/amdgpu/vce of the component VCE. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu/vce: fix integer overflow in image size Fix a security vulnerability where malicious VCE command streams with oversized dimensions (e.g. 65536×65536) cause 32-bit integer overflow, wrapping the calculated buffer size to 0. This bypasses validation and allows GPU firmware to perform out-of-bound memory access. The fix uses 64-bit arithmetic to detect overflow and rejects invalid dimensions before they reach the hardware. V2: remove redundant check V3: modify max height value V4: remove size64 (cherry picked from commit cbe408dba581755ad1279a487ec786d8927d778d)

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-68108 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.148, 6.12.101, 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a07430abd556de3707adfcadcc60db3fa64e4b2b/a6d7065b91a14790980ce6f4960db0ca8c3c9940/7eebef042c12dfe0568593ee6a8926d16505925e/00c311a13d225266800c712f2b7db2711c6897de/186bfdc4e26d019b2e7570cb121964a1d89b2e5b is able to eliminate this problem.
