Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3 irdma irdma_setup_virt_qp user_wqe_bufs null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3 and classified as critical. The impacted element is the function irdma_setup_virt_qp of the component irdma. Executing a manipulation of the argument user_wqe_bufs can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-68418. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function irdma_setup_virt_qp of the component irdma. The manipulation of the argument user_wqe_bufs with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/irdma: Prevent user-triggered null deref on QP create Previously, the user QP creation path would only attempt to populate iwqp->iwpbl if the user-provided req.user_wqe_bufs field was non-zero. The problem is that iwqp->iwpbl is unconditionally dereferenced later on in irdma_setup_virt_qp. While there was a check for iwqp->iwpbl != NULL, this check would only occur if req.user_wqe_bufs was non-zero. The end result is that a user could send a zero user_wqe_bufs value and trigger a null ptr deref. Fix this by unconditionally calling irdma_get_pbl and bailing if it fails, similar to the CQ and SRQ paths.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-68418 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ec675b4cdfd378d8c9dd8c93126c024f2469bd79/728211c815f6eef28dd3df2a5b6297483185aa20/b9b0889071569d43623c260074e159cd8f26adb1 is able to eliminate this problem.
