A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Visual Studio up to 6.0 (Programming Tool Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file pdwizard.ocx of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. A certain ActiveX control in PDWizard.ocx 6.0.0.9782 and earlier in Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 exposes dangerous (1) StartProcess, (2) SyncShell, (3) SaveAs, (4) CABDefaultURL, (5) CABFileName, and (6) CABRunFile methods, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary programs and have other impacts, as demonstrated using absolute pathnames in arguments to StartProcess and SyncShell.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2007. The weakness was disclosed 09/11/2007 by shinnai (Website). The advisory is available at shinnai.altervista.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4891 since 09/13/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by shinnai and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12459. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5829.
