Microsoft Office Word 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP3, and 2007 Gold and SP1; Outlook 2007 Gold and SP1; Word Viewer 2003 Gold and SP3; Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats Gold and SP1; Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac; and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted control words related to multiple Drawing Object tags in (1) an RTF file or (2) a rich text e-mail message, which triggers incorrect memory allocation and a heap-based buffer overflow, aka "Word RTF Object Parsing Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-4030.

The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-4028 since 09/10/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50060 (MS08-072 / MS08-074: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (957173 / 959070) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110092 (Microsoft Word Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS08-072)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6611.
