A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word 2000/2002/2003/2007 (Word Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. Microsoft Office Word 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP3, and 2007 Gold and SP1; Outlook 2007 Gold and SP1; Word Viewer 2003 Gold and SP3; and Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats Gold and SP1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted control words in (1) an RTF file or (2) a rich text e-mail message, which triggers incorrect memory allocation and memory corruption, aka "Word RTF Object Parsing Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-4028.

The bug was discovered 12/09/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2008 by Ricardo Narvaja (team509) with ZDI as MS08-072 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-4030 since 09/10/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35071 (MS08-072: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (957173)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110092 (Microsoft Word Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS08-072)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6612.
