Unspecified vulnerability in EMC VMware Workstation before 5.5.5 Build 56455 and 6.x before 6.0.1 Build 55017, Player before 1.0.5 Build 56455 and Player 2 before 2.0.1 Build 55017, ACE before 1.0.3 Build 54075 and ACE 2 before 2.0.1 Build 55017, and Server before 1.0.4 Build 56528 allows users with login access to a guest operating system to cause a denial of service (guest outage and host process crash or hang) via unspecified vectors.
The bug was discovered 09/18/2007. The weakness was disclosed 09/21/2007 by Rafal Wojtczvk (Website). The advisory is shared at vmware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4497 since 08/22/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116315 (Critical Security Updates for all Supported Versions of VMware ESX Server VMware Server VMware Workstation VMware ACE and VMware Player (VMSA-2007-0006)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.4_build_56528 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
