Array index vulnerability in Microsoft Office Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, and 2003 SP3; Excel Viewer 2003 Gold and SP3; Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac; and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel spreadsheet with a NAME record that contains an invalid index value, which triggers stack corruption, aka "Excel Global Array Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 12/09/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2008 by Claes M Nyberg with signedness.org as MS08-074 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-4266 since 09/25/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50060 (MS08-072 / MS08-074: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (957173 / 959070) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110090 (Microsoft Excel Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS08-074)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-074 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6610.
