A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5/6/7 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component WebDAV. Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 sometimes attempts to access uninitialized memory locations, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML document that triggers memory corruption, related to a WebDAV request for a file with a long name, aka "HTML Objects Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was presented 12/09/2008 by Brett Moore (shinnai) with ZDI as MS08-073 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-4259 since 09/25/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3843 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35072 (MS08-073: Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Vulnerabilities (958215)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100064 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS08-073)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-073 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6615.
