Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 sometimes attempts to access a deleted object, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML document that triggers memory corruption, aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was shared 12/09/2008 by Chris Weber (shinnai) with Casaba Security as MS08-073 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-4260 since 09/25/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3843 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-073 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6604.
