OpenSSL up to 0.9.8f ssl_get_shared_ciphers numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ssl_get_shared_ciphers. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Off-by-one error in the SSL_get_shared_ciphers function in OpenSSL 0.9.7 up to 0.9.7l, and 0.9.8 up to 0.9.8f, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted packet that triggers a one-byte buffer underflow. NOTE: this issue was introduced as a result of a fix for CVE-2006-3738. As of 20071012, it is unknown whether code execution is possible.

The bug was discovered 09/27/2007. The weakness was released 09/27/2007 by Moritz Jodeit (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5135 since 09/27/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/29/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1731 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17758 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38595 (OpenSSL "SSL_get_shared_ciphers()" Off-By-One Buffer Overflow).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8981.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36837), Tenable (17758), SecurityFocus (BID 25831†), OSVDB (29262†) and Secunia (SA27394†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2576, VDB-3704 and VDB-39241. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
