A vulnerability was found in SAP GUI 6.40/7.10. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component TabOne ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in the AddTab method in the (1) Tab and (2) CTab ActiveX controls in c1sizer.ocx and the (3) TabOne ActiveX control in sizerone.ocx in ComponentOne SizerOne 8.0.20081.140, as used in ComponentOne Studio for ActiveX 2008, TSC2 Help Desk 4.1.8, SAP GUI 6.40 Patch 29 and 7.10, and possibly other products, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by adding many tabs, or adding tabs with long tab captions.
The weakness was presented 01/08/2009 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-4827 since 10/31/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35327 (SizerOne ActiveX Control AddTab Method Remote Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116180 (SAP GUI TabOne ActiveX Control Caption List Buffer Overflow).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at service.sap.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15194. In this case the pattern TabOne.TabOne is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8674.
