Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8j (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function EVP_VerifyFinal of the component DSA/ECDSA Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
OpenSSL 0.9.8i and earlier does not properly check the return value from the EVP_VerifyFinal function, which allows remote attackers to bypass validation of the certificate chain via a malformed SSL/TLS signature for DSA and ECDSA keys.
The issue has been introduced in 01/07/2009. The weakness was shared 01/08/2009 with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5077 since 11/14/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17762 (OpenSSL < 0.9.8j Signature Spoofing), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86849 (HP System Management Homepage Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
