Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 ip_vti vti_changelink privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. Affected by this issue is the function vti_changelink of the component ip_vti. This manipulation causes privileges management. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-72054. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. Affected by this vulnerability is the function vti_changelink of the component ip_vti. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ip_vti: require CAP_NET_ADMIN in the device netns for changelink vti_changelink() operates on at most two netns, dev_net(dev) and the tunnel link netns t->net. They differ once the device is created in or moved to a netns other than the one the request runs in. The rtnl changelink path checks CAP_NET_ADMIN only against dev_net(dev), so a caller privileged there but not in t->net can rewrite a tunnel that lives in t->net. Gate vti_changelink() on rtnl_dev_link_net_capable() at its top, before any attribute is parsed.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-72054 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
