Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 ip6_vti vti6_changelink privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. This affects the function vti6_changelink of the component ip6_vti. Such manipulation leads to privileges management. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2026-72055. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. Affected by this issue is the function vti6_changelink of the component ip6_vti. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ip6_vti: require CAP_NET_ADMIN in the device netns for changelink vti6_changelink() operates on at most two netns, dev_net(dev) and the tunnel link netns t->net. They differ once the device is created in or moved to a netns other than the one the request runs in. The rtnl changelink path checks CAP_NET_ADMIN only against dev_net(dev), so a caller privileged there but not in t->net can rewrite a tunnel that lives in t->net. Gate vti6_changelink() on rtnl_dev_link_net_capable() at its top, before any attribute is parsed.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-72055 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f5254e7766b4ac02b66b2ccef896cd278503cb11/ef897249dc957089e6f7f11ceea699e093ad51bd/f6e8b52a2cb3bbd72ddc2d44e474b907b9dcf5ba/c64b9ae7eb97e81d54b792910a3aeafd92566c79/b2b61c540571b3cc2f461e2a579ba2cc8c2a52cf/0b2f9c908f930ec4be17d389723f9a202d6a883c/f97e93ebf2f9b8ef3b87f7a9371255e84d151587/e2ac3b242c37dff323a964962e43854f4b1a2b79 is able to eliminate this problem.
