Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 bnx2x bnx2x_alloc_mem_bp memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function bnx2x_alloc_mem_bp of the component bnx2x. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bnx2x: fix potential memory leak in bnx2x_alloc_mem_bp() If the allocation of fp[i].tpa_info fails, the error path will not free the struct bnx2x_fastpath allocated earlier, as it is not linked to the bp structure yet. Fix that by linking it immediately after allocation.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-72039 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

Upgrading to version 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 58594ed2a2f859ffb93edbbfa4aabb7739bea383/c51b280b9cd3c9e97bf2cde33bb795c511f09669/6d46eaa1e4c078ad674908e24b86e431a7fd4b15/5576ee19a6a4aa111c61ce974e70bb79e7bb3952/7d8d454b5d24dbad346cd57ef315e7bf1ee8e856/6c98ccdb9a0967e04a7b1866eb0d97c0c8c0e403/356077547b1afa34a8ebae77176a577631a89041/a986fde914d88af47eb78fd29c5d1af7952c3500 is able to eliminate this problem.
