Linux Kernel up to 6.6.144/6.12.96/6.18.39/7.1.4 espintcp sk_msg_free_partial iteration

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.144/6.12.96/6.18.39/7.1.4 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function sk_msg_free_partial of the component espintcp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a iteration vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-834. The product performs an iteration or loop without sufficiently limiting the number of times that the loop is executed. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: espintcp: use sk_msg_free_partial to fix partial send sk_msg_free_partial() ensures consistency of the skmsg at every iteration, without having to manually handle uncharges and offsets. This simplifies the code, and fixes some bugs in skmsg accounting when we don't send the full contents.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-72041 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 54d73f18f8919735f4d04d6f43374f75756c0180/14c0b42c8a2cd9b5361bbff45b52f69c62c6a286/a66d45e0ce6d73cd79962d422388e61bfaf0cb50/a338ce41bc933d8f74c39d9b3b6f1d8ca53d9714/007800408002d871f5699bdb944f985896730b8f is able to eliminate this problem.
