Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.177/6.6.144/6.12.96/6.18.39/7.1.4. It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function test_bit of the component ipset. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: ipset: Don't use test_bit() in lockless RCU readers in hash types Sashiko pointed out that there are a few lockless RCU readers using test_bit() which is a relaxed atomic operation and provides no memory barrier guarantees. Use test_bit_acquire() instead where the operation may run parallel with add/del/gc, i.e. is not one from the next cases - protected by region lock - in a set destroy phase - in a new/temporary set creation phase
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-72436 since 08/09/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
