Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Tcl Tk Tk Toolkit up to 8.4.12. This vulnerability affects the function readimage of the file tkimggif.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the FileReadGIF function in tkImgGIF.c for Tk Toolkit 8.4.12 and earlier, and 8.3.5 and earlier, allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via an animated GIF in which the first subimage is smaller than a subsequent subimage, which triggers the overflow in the ReadImage function, a different vulnerability than CVE-2007-5137.
The bug was discovered 02/06/2008. The weakness was released 10/11/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5378 since 10/11/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
