A vulnerability was found in VMware Workstation, Player, ACE and Server (Virtualization Software) (the affected version unknown) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function ConnectPopulatedDiskEx in the library reconfig.dll of the file vmount2.exe of the component ActiveX Control. Unspecified vulnerability in a certain ActiveX control in Reconfig.DLL in VMware Workstation 5.5.x before 5.5.8 build 108000, VMware Workstation 6.0.x before 6.0.5 build 109488, VMware Player 1.x before 1.0.8 build 108000, VMware Player 2.x before 2.0.5 build 109488, VMware ACE 1.x before 1.0.7 build 108880, VMware ACE 2.x before 2.0.5 build 109488, and VMware Server before 1.0.7 build 108231 might allow local users to cause a denial of service to the Virtual Disk Mount Service (vmount2.exe), related to the ConnectPopulatedDiskEx function.
The weakness was published 10/10/2007 by Michal Bucko (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5438 since 10/12/2007. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34156 (VMware Products Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2008-0014)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
