BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 6.1, 7.0, and 8.1, with RMI and anonymous admin lookup enabled, allows remote attackers to obtain configuration information by accessing MBeanHome via the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI).
The weakness was presented 11/14/2003 with BEA (Website). The advisory is shared at dev2dev.bea.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-1290 since 01/13/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86730 (BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express MBean Remote Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftpna.beasys.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
