A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Symantec Mail Security Appliance 5.0.x. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Products KeyView. Stack-based buffer overflow in wp6sr.dll in the Autonomy KeyView SDK 10.4 and earlier, as used in IBM Lotus Notes, Symantec Mail Security (SMS) products, Symantec BrightMail Appliance products, and Symantec Data Loss Prevention (DLP) products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Word Perfect Document (WPD) file.

The bug was discovered 03/17/2009. The weakness was disclosed 03/17/2009 by iDefense Labs with 0-day (Website). The advisory is available at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-4564 since 10/14/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityresponse.symantec.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8716.
