Serverkit shttp 0.0.4 safe_path path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5685. Furthermore, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Serverkit shttp 0.0.4. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function safe_path. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The safe_path function in shttp before 0.0.5 allows remote attackers to conduct directory traversal attacks and read files via a combination of ".." and sub-directory specifiers that resolve to a pathname that is at or below the same level as the web document root, but in a different part of the directory tree.

The bug was discovered 10/24/2007. The weakness was published 10/25/2007 by Pete Foster (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at digineo.co.uk. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-5685 since 10/28/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 0.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37455), Exploit-DB (30711), SecurityFocus (BID 26212†) and OSVDB (43607†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
