Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the kernel in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.10 allows local users to bypass the chroot mechanism via a relative path when changing the current working directory.
The bug was discovered 11/14/2007. The weakness was shared 11/14/2007 by Ilja van Sprundel (Sean) with RISE Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4683 since 09/05/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28212 (Mac OS X < 10.4.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115661 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-11-14)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38467), Tenable (28212), SecurityFocus (BID 26444†), OSVDB (40677†) and Secunia (SA27643†).
