A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 8 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component DHTML Call Handler. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified DHTML function calls related to a tr element and the "insertion, deletion and attributes of a table cell," which trigger memory corruption when the window is destroyed, aka "DHTML Object Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 06/09/2009 by Haifei Li with Fortinet as MS09-019 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1141 since 03/25/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39341 (MS09-019: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (969897)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100073 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS09-019)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS09-019 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8218.
