Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark 0.99.5/0.99.6 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the ANSI MAP dissector for Wireshark (formerly Ethereal) 0.99.5 to 0.99.6, when running on unspecified platforms, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.
The bug was discovered 11/22/2007. The weakness was presented 11/23/2007 by Stefan Esser with Beyond Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-6115 since 11/23/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43670 (CentOS 4 / 5 : wireshark (CESA-2008:0058)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117374 (CentOS Security Update for Wireshark (CESA-2008:0059)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38741), Tenable (43670), SecurityFocus (BID 26532†), OSVDB (40455†) and Secunia (SA27777†). See VDB-37451, VDB-37450, VDB-37449 and VDB-37448 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
