Wireshark up to 0.99.6 Bluetooth SDP Dissector memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Wireshark up to 0.99.6. This affects an unknown function of the component Bluetooth SDP Dissector. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-6120. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark up to 0.99.6 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Bluetooth SDP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The Bluetooth SDP dissector Wireshark (formerly Ethereal) 0.99.2 to 0.99.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via unknown vectors.

The bug was discovered 11/22/2007. The weakness was presented 11/23/2007 by Stefan Esser with Beyond Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-6120 since 11/23/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43670 (CentOS 4 / 5 : wireshark (CESA-2008:0058)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117374 (CentOS Security Update for Wireshark (CESA-2008:0059)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38749), Tenable (43670), SecurityFocus (BID 26532†), OSVDB (40450†) and Secunia (SA27777†). See VDB-37451, VDB-37450, VDB-37449 and VDB-37448 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
