The weakness was disclosed 07/14/2009 by Thomas Garnier with iDefense as MS09-029 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0232 since 01/20/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39792 (MS09-029: Vulnerabilities in the Embedded OpenType Font Engine Could Allow Remote Code Execution (961371)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90511 (Microsoft Embedded OpenType Font Engine Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS09-029)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS09-029 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4062.
