The Embedded OpenType (EOT) Font Engine (T2EMBED.DLL) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP2, Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, and Server 2008 Gold and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted name table in a data record that triggers an integer truncation and a heap-based buffer overflow, aka "Embedded OpenType Font Heap Overflow Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 07/14/2009 by Thomas Garnier (iDefense) with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS09-029 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0231 since 01/20/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS09-029 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4062.
