Microsoft Office 2007 Pointer code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Microsoft Office 2007. The affected element is an unknown function of the component Pointer Handler. Performing a manipulation results in code injection. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2009-0566. There is no exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Office 2007 (Office Suite Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Pointer Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 SP1 does not properly calculate object handler data for Publisher files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file in a legacy format that triggers memory corruption, aka "Pointer Dereference Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was shared 07/14/2009 by Lionel d'Hauenens Labo Skopia with iDefense as MS09-030 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0566 since 02/12/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 896 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39793 (MS09-030: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (969516)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110095 (Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-030)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS09-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8306.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51462), Tenable (39793), SecurityFocus (BID 35599†), OSVDB (55838†) and Secunia (SA35779†). The entry VDB-4000 is related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
