Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.3. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component i3c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i3c: renesas: Fix out-of-bounds access for newdevs mask When software initiates DAA (Dynamic Address Assignment), the controller reports the result via the NRSPQP (Normal Response Queue Port Register). The data length field of the response descriptor, which is accessible through the NRSPQP register, indicates the number of devices remaining after DAA. Consequently, when the bus is empty, this field contains the maximum number of devices supported by the controller (8 for the Renesas I3C controller). Adjust the condition that computes the newly discovered devices bitmask to prevent an out-of-bounds when the I3C bus is empty.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-89728 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).
Upgrading to version 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 769f5a233efcf8587f70fb2244a202d88582c746/50dec95c9d1f1f82819bc898ef2b60fa83fd4ccd is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
