Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 altera-cvp altera_cvp_send_block out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. This issue affects the function altera_cvp_send_block of the component altera-cvp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fpga: altera-cvp: Avoid out-of-bounds read in trailing byte write The trailing byte path in altera_cvp_send_block() dereferences a u32 pointer even when only 1-3 bytes remain in the input buffer. If the buffer ends at a page or scatterlist boundary, this can read past the valid image data and fault. Copy the remaining bytes into a zero-initialized u32 before writing the final word so only valid bytes are read from the input buffer.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-89730 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b138bc665e21d4422382ab43aebdf0a2b7bb9cb3/827ec385458adeeda651de2b6f3537e386b1a8d9/4dc1051939e499c838229af035464a5fc7671198/9da70a43b5fea60d758137f7f0ccfe19356cb5bb is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
