Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 zram zram_destroy_comps null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3. This impacts the function zram_destroy_comps of the component zram. This manipulation causes null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-89717. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function zram_destroy_comps of the component zram. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: zram: set default primary compressor in zram_destroy_comps() Patch series "zram: fix zram issues reported by sashiko". Sashiko drove by and reported [1] a couple of zram issues: a possible BUG_ON() in zlib code due to missing winbits range validation and one possible NULL-ptr dereference in zcomp. Both are low risk yet still worth fixing. This patch (of 2): zram_destroy_comps() resets all compressors and leaves them set to NULL, including the primary one, which is invalid device state, as now comp_algorithm_show()->strcmp() can be called on a NULL compressor. Set default primary compressor in zram_destroy_comps().

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-89717 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5cec3e60e9f2d1324179df3aa91656f90095cf8f/dea8f13c3dfad8b990f8ea96c997aabeebbc1d22/dde75313eed0b014c437f48dd75c0308b592cbf9 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
