Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 zram read_block_state out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function read_block_state of the component zram. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: zram: fix out-of-bounds access in read_block_state() read_block_state() calculates nr_pages before taking dev_lock. If the device is reset and reinitialized with a smaller disksize before lock acquisition, nr_pages still describes the old table. The subsequent loop can then call slot_lock() past the end of the newly allocated table. Read disksize after acquiring dev_lock and checking that the device is initialized. The read lock then keeps the table and its bound stable for the duration of the scan.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-89719 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e7dbcb7a561a21e9a8f5b5fa90bb95aefbd0739d/5e458fa714a55b6b64a9fe0c6d4fa609609f9ec3/391f057f44a51cc9418da5cba78b014324174264 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
