Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 ALSA pcxhr_probe uninitialized variable

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function pcxhr_probe of the component ALSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized variable vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-457. The code uses a variable that has not been initialized, leading to unpredictable or unintended results. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: pcxhr: initialize mutexes before requesting threaded IRQ pcxhr_probe() requests pcxhr_threaded_irq() before initializing mgr->lock, even though the threaded handler takes that mutex. Initialize the manager locks before request_threaded_irq() so an early interrupt cannot run against uninitialized mutex state during probe.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-80967 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c069b3cfd753d6688ea0271c43553631ab38ce10/7ef9ad82d95dd3c74570d80a689a0570fbc7539e/7cf280fbef5db6310e1b32074c8c34d1ba459796/6c97817e20598e5473094e0e38d1f51f1cf4dfff is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
