Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 mts64 probe ID out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function probe of the component mts64. The manipulation of the argument id with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: mts64: Check card index validity at probe Although mts64 driver has a check of the given devptr->id value, it doesn't check for a negative id, which is often given as "none" or such value when bound via sysfs. This may lead to OOB access for index[] and other parameters. Add a sanity check for the card index and warn/correct it if it's a value out of the range.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-80968 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 036e7aa793375ab16ea0f64b8de6673220416cc1/a4e774eeb61aec64da5b03d3becffde26f7fe4de/cf3af453a48c8d905512dfc44a5a59439b70f4f0/d18a260720f86a5f8b5fcfefc4ba2e9dd01c10f8 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
