Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenPegasus Management server 3.0.1. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component PAM Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in OpenPegasus Management server, when compiled to use PAM and with PEGASUS_USE_PAM_STANDALONE_PROC defined, as used in VMWare ESX Server 3.0.1 and 3.0.2, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to PAM authentication, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-0003.

The bug was discovered 01/07/2008. The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5360 since 10/10/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
