A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in VideoLAN VLC 0.8.6d (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file modules/demux/subtitle.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Stack-based buffer overflow in modules/demux/subtitle.c in VideoLAN VLC 0.8.6d allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long subtitle in a (1) MicroDvd, (2) SSA, and (3) Vplayer file.

The weakness was shared 12/24/2007 by Luigi Auriemma as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-6681 since 01/16/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by j0rgan and been published 6 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32045 (GLSA-200804-25 : VLC: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115683 (VideoLAN VLC Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).
