X.Org Xserver before 1.4.1 allows local users to determine the existence of arbitrary files via a filename argument in the -sp option to the X program, which produces different error messages depending on whether the filename exists.
The bug was discovered 01/17/2008. The weakness was published 01/18/2008 by regenrecht with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5958 since 11/14/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31274.
