Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This affects an unknown part of the component fetchmail. Executing a manipulation can lead to buffer overflow. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-94184. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (the affected version unknown). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component fetchmail. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A stack-based buffer overflow flaw was found in fetchmail when built with NTLM support. A malicious or compromised mail server advertising NTLM authentication can send a crafted Type 2 challenge that causes fetchmail to write past a fixed stack buffer while building the NTLM authenticate response. This may lead to remote code execution depending on stack-frame layout, or to authentication failure or process termination under memory hardening.

The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-94184 since 09/21/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 09/21/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
